Empowering Women in the Great Outdoors Guiding Industry
Share
Since the pandemic, outdoor culture is on the rise, as people seek more adventures and nature-based experiences. With this, the outdoor guiding industry is growing in demand. As a woman pursuing a lifestyle of adventure guiding, it is evident that there is a blind spot in the industry in regards to female workers. Historically, outdoor guiding has been a male-dominated profession with an exclusive culture among both guides and clients. The stereotype associated with outdoor guides and adventure activities is one of machismo, emphasizing immense physical strength, resilience, and hard skills for success, traits often linked to alpha masculinity. As a woman participating in these activities, l've often found myself as the only female or one of very few. My skills and competencies have been underestimated, yet sometimes I'm overly praised for my ability to perform certain tasks. In this male-dominated field, actions that might seem ordinary when performed by a man are considered surprising when accomplished by a woman.
However, the industry is gradually shifting. More women are seeking competence and taking on leadership roles, leading to a less rigid culture and increased opportunities for skill-building and shared experiences.
